Changes to The Hatters Arms From 5th January 2010.

Welcome to The Hatters Arms

The Hatters opened as a beer house around 1855. The occupants of the local cottages, on what was known as Chapel Road, were engaged in producing the raw materials for making hats and it is most likely that the pub was used as a sort of labour exchange.

The Pub was bought by Robinsons Brewery in 1920 and a map in the deeds of that year shows that along with wash-houses and a stable there was a cinema called 'The Little Gem'. The owner, a Mr. Ball, played the piano during the showing of silent movies. He enjoyed his pint in the Hatters too and the show couldn't start until he had his 'ration'. Like a number of local pubs the Hatters kept its Beer-Only License until well into the 1950s. A full Wine, Spirits and Beer license was granted in 1962.

Today the Hatters still have many of the original features including oak panelling, original bar frontage and a forgotten feature within many pubs of similar age a 'Working' waiter service bell installed into the seating area for those people that are a little busy to get to the bar or just like the convenience of having your drinks served to your table.

Anita & Mark Singleton are only the 11th licensees since the Hatters opened its door back in 1855. They took the license in September 2000 after returning to their home town. Previously they ran The Square & Compass in Derbyshire, a very successful Robinson's public house with 5 en-suite rooms, a restaurant and a campsite for ten years. Mark's Father Ron was the licensee of the Navigation Hotel, Marple from 1966 to 1991. Altogether the Singleton family have been tenants for over 40 years.

The Hatters Arms prides itself on keeping a good pint of beer and was given a place in the C.A.M.R.A good beer guide in 2006. The Hatters was also awarded First  prize in the Robinson's Pub in Bloom competition in 2005 for its hanging baskets and window box displays. The Hatters Arms retains its original character and provides a welcoming easy-going atmosphere for customers to enjoy a good night out, so why not pop in and say hello.
